The artistic work of Damascus steel dates back thousands of years. First, a pattern is engraved on the surface of a steel or iron object. A thin sheet of gold is then placed over the motif and incorporated into the motif with a small hammer. Heat the object to 800 degrees so you can see the new built-in motif. This technique was brought to Spain by the Arabs and has been perfected for centuries, especially in the famous Spanish city of Toledo. In the year 1931 Pelikan adopted this technique for the Toledo model with so much success that the design has remained virtually unchanged over the years. Since then, the basic design of the Toledo hasn't changed. Today the decorative case is made from a single piece of Sterling Silver. The motif is worked with the utmost care through various processes until it is finished with a gold plate, it is carefully treated in various steps until the motif is covered with a layer of gold. Each Toledo fountain pen is a unique piece made in Germany. This is because the tiny engravings in the motif are handcrafted, giving life to each Pelican feather. It requires a lot of elaborate work, so the maximum quantity that can be produced in one month is 200. The cap, the front and the terminal are made of high quality black resin.
